Trump Threatens Iran With Eye-for-an-Eye Response

US President Donald Trump said the United States will destroy one bridge or power plant in Iran for every attack by the country on a ship in the Strait of Hormuz, raising the risk of further escalation and disruption to global oil flows.

Trump said in a post on Truth Social on Wednesday that the response would apply to attacks involving missiles, rockets, drones or any other weapon. He said the targets could include infrastructure near Tehran.

The warning comes a fragile ceasefire between the two sides is almost over.

US and Israel had first struck Iran on February 28. Iran retaliated against US military positions and targets in Gulf countries, while the fighting disrupted energy supplies and shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

They later agreed to a two-week ceasefire brokered by Pakistan on April 8, though some fighting continued and the two sides differed over arrangements for reopening the Strait of Hormuz. A memorandum signed on June 17 was intended to provide a 60-day window for negotiations on a permanent agreement.

The ceasefire began to unravel after three commercial ships were hit in the Strait of Hormuz in early July. Iran did not claim responsibility for the attacks. The US resumed strikes on Iran and revoked a licence allowing Iranian oil sales, while Tehran accused Washington of violating the agreement by challenging its claimed role in managing safe passage through the strait. Trump said on July 8 that he considered the interim agreement to be over.

The US and Iran have since intensified attacks, with control of the Strait of Hormuz emerging as a key point of dispute. The renewed fighting has raised risks for oil and gas supplies through the waterway, which carried about one-fifth of global oil flows before the war.

India remains exposed to any prolonged disruption in the Strait of Hormuz, particularly through LPG supplies.
