“What is most important is that unlike business, a profession is supposed to have an element of public service”

Anil Agarwal of Vedanta Airs out Legal Battle with Vedanta in Full Public View
Vedanta has moved swiftly to approach the Supreme Court, seeking a pause on the implementation of Adani’s resolution plan for Jaiprakash Associates. This comes shortly after the NCLAT declined to grant relief and days after Anil Agarwal, Vedanta’s chairman, flagged the issue on social media, offering limited detail but enough to suggest his company had been wronged.
At the centre of this very public contest is the corporate insolvency resolution process for Jaiprakash Associates, a bid fiercely contested by these two players. Just as Vedanta appeared to be in the lead and on the verge of securing the asset, Adani stepped in, altered the course of events and ultimately emerged victorious. Vedanta’s core argument remains unchanged: that the process was flawed and that Adani was awarded the asset despite offering lower value.
The legal battle over control of Jaiprakash Associates is now playing out in the courts. Yet, Agarwal’s intervention on social media has elevated the dispute into the public domain, turning it into one of the more closely watched corporate battles. The language of the post was carefully chosen, given that the matter is sub judice, but even a lay observer can discern an attempt to shape public sentiment in Vedanta’s favour.
Whether Vedanta’s claims will stand legal scrutiny will take time to determine. What is already evident, however, is that the contest is no longer confined to courtrooms. It is being fought as much on perception and optics as on law.
