India’s automobile retail sales rose 17.51% on year to 2.42 million units in August, marking the biggest-ever August in the VAHAN series, the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations said. Electric vehicle retail sales surged 52.9% on year to a record 298,448 units, taking overall EV penetration to around 12.3% from 9.5% a year ago.
The overall growth came despite retail sales falling 6.48% month on month from a record July, with FADA attributing the sequential moderation to the seasonal monsoon lull and a festival calendar that pushed Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam-related buying into September. Two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles and three-wheelers each recorded their best-ever August sales.
Two-wheeler retail sales increased 19.69% on year to 1.71 million units, while passenger vehicle sales rose 16.14% to 402,398 units, crossing the 400,000 mark for the first time in August. Commercial vehicle sales increased 14.45% to 90,769 units, while three-wheeler sales rose 8.64% to 122,281 units. Wheeled construction equipment recorded the fastest growth among categories, rising 31.45% to 5,166 units.
The main weakness was tractors, where sales were effectively flat at 87,977 units, up just 0.84% on year and down 25.03% month on month. FADA said the performance reflected monsoon-linked rural stress, with the all-India rainfall deficit widening to around 13%.
Rural demand nevertheless remained stronger than urban demand across the overall market. Rural retail sales increased 19.79% on year, compared with 15.17% growth in urban markets. Rural passenger vehicle sales jumped 24.99%, more than double the 10.93% growth in urban markets. FADA said this indicated that parts of the rural economy were increasingly decoupling from rainfall conditions, supported by non-farm activity.
The release also highlighted a structural shift towards alternative-fuel vehicles. In passenger vehicles, the combined share of CNG, hybrids and EVs reached 41.95%, marginally exceeding petrol's 40.85% share for the first time. EV retail sales across categories reached an all-time August high, with electric commercial vehicles also recording a monthly record.
FADA cautioned that August's strong year-on-year growth partly reflects a favourable base, as purchases were deferred in August 2025 ahead of the GST 2.0 rate cut. For September, 67.09% of dealers expect growth, while 27.35% expect a flat market. Over September-November, 81.62% expect growth, leaving the industry cautiously optimistic ahead of the festive season.
