Larsen & Toubro’s transportation infrastructure business has won a significant order to build an arterial cable-stayed bridge over the Muri Ganga river in West Bengal’s South 24 Parganas district.
The scope includes construction of a 3.2 km, 2+2 lane extradosed cable-stayed bridge with a maximum span of 177 metres. The project also covers approach roads of 0.9 km on the Kakdwip side and 0.65 km on the Sagar Island side.
The bridge will be equipped with advanced traffic management systems, bridge health monitoring, architectural and high-mast lighting, along with essential road furniture.
The project will provide direct, all-weather connectivity to Sagar Island, which currently relies on ferry services that are often disrupted during adverse weather. The improved access is expected to benefit more than two lakh residents by supporting mobility, healthcare access and economic activity.
The bridge is also expected to support large-scale pilgrimage traffic by enabling safer and more convenient travel for devotees attending the annual Ganga Sagar Mela, one of the country’s largest religious gatherings.
Beyond social benefits, the project is expected to support trade, tourism and local businesses, contributing to long-term economic development on the island.
Under L&T’s order classification, a significant contract is valued between ₹10.0 billion and ₹25.0 billion.
