India July Enemployment Rate Falls to 5.1%; Edges up in Urban Area

India’s unemployment rate among people aged 15 years and above fell to 5.1% in July from 5.5% in June, while labour force participation and the worker population ratio improved, indicating a broad strengthening in labour-market conditions, according to the latest Periodic Labour Force Survey.

The overall Labour Force Participation Rate rose to 55.4% in July from 54.4% in June, reversing declines seen between March and May and a flat reading in June.

Rural LFPR increased by 1.4 percentage points to 58.0% from 56.6%, while urban LFPR edged up to 50.4% from 50.1%.

Compared with a year earlier, overall LFPR was 0.5 percentage point higher. Rural LFPR rose 1.1 percentage points on year, while urban participation was 0.3 percentage point lower.

Female labour-force participation showed a sharper improvement. Overall female LFPR increased to 34.4% in July from 32.7% in June, with rural female participation rising to 38.8% from 36.6% and urban female LFPR increasing to 25.3% from 24.8%.

On a year-on-year basis, overall female LFPR was 1.1 percentage points higher and rural female LFPR rose 1.9 percentage points, while urban female LFPR remained 0.5 percentage point below its year-ago level.

The Worker Population Ratio, which measures the proportion of the population that is employed, increased to 52.5% from 51.4%, marking its first monthly rise since February.

Rural WPR rose by 1.6 percentage points to 55.4%, while urban WPR increased marginally to 47.0% from 46.8%.

The improvement was particularly strong among rural women, with their WPR rising to 37.2% from 34.7% in June. Urban female WPR increased to 23.1% from 22.7%.

Compared with July 2025, overall WPR was 0.5 percentage point higher, while rural WPR rose 1 percentage point. Urban WPR was unchanged at 47.0%.

The unemployment rate fell most sharply in rural areas, declining to 4.5% from 5.0% in June. Urban unemployment, however, edged up to 6.7% from 6.6%.

Male unemployment declined to 5.0% from 5.3% overall, while rural male unemployment eased to 4.6% from 4.9%. Urban male unemployment was broadly stable on month but was down 0.7 percentage point from a year earlier at 5.9%.

Overall and rural female unemployment also declined from June, though both remained above year-ago levels. Urban female unemployment moved in the opposite direction, rising to 8.8% in July from 8.4% in June, and was broadly unchanged from 8.7% a year earlier.
