The Indian Armed Forces carried out precision strikes early Wednesday under ‘Operation Sindoor’, targeting nine terrorist camps located deep inside Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The pre-dawn action was confirmed by a Ministry of Defence press release issued at 1:44 AM on May 7.
The strikes were in retaliation to the Pahalgam terrorist attack that claimed 26 lives, including 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen. Indian authorities described the response as “focused, measured and non-escalatory,” emphasising that no Pakistani military installations were targeted.
According to media reports, the camps hit included locations up to 100 km across the Line of Control, with Bahawalpur, Muridke and Gulpur among the farthest. Other sites included Sawai, Bilal, Kotli, Barnala, Sarjal and Mehmoona camps. The strikes were aimed at infrastructure believed to have directed cross-border attacks on Indian soil.
The government noted that India had exercised restraint in both target selection and operational methods. A more detailed briefing on the operation is expected later today.
Separately, PTI reported that three civilians were killed in overnight heavy firing and shelling by Pakistani forces across the Line of Control and the International Border in Jammu and Kashmir, according to defence sources on Wednesday. The Indian Army is said to be responding “in equal measure” to the ceasefire violations that followed the missile strikes on the nine terror targets.
