Tata Motors Ltd. reported a decline in automobile despatches to Indian dealerships for the fourth consecutive month in April, with both the passenger vehicle and commercial vehicle segments contracting, according to the company’s exchange filing on Thursday. However, exports emerged as a positive aspect, with combined exports of its commercial and passenger vehicle segments reaching 1,790 units in April, marking a 60% on year growth.
The company sold 72,753 units to dealers in April, reflecting a 6% drop compared to the same month last year. Tata Motors has not posted a sales growth exceeding 1% since June of the previous year. Domestic despatches in India stood at 70,963 units, down 7% on year. In 2024-25, Tata Motors’ domestic despatches exceeded the 3% growth mark only once, in April.
Passenger vehicles accounted for roughly 62% of the company’s total sales volume in April. The company sold 45,532 passenger vehicles, including electric vehicles, a 5% decline from the previous year. Sales in India for this segment fell by nearly 6% to 45,199 units, although exports increased to 333 units, a three-fold increase from the previous year. The company sold 5,318 electric vehicles in India and abroad, down 16% on year.
In the commercial vehicle segment, despatches contracted by 8% on year to 27,221 units. Sales to dealers in India fell by 10% to 25,764 units, though exports surged 43% to 1,457 units.
Small commercial vehicle sales, which make up around 36% of Tata Motors' India commercial vehicle segment, plummeted by 23% on year to 9,131 units. Heavy commercial truck despatches declined by 8% to 7,270 units. However, despatches of intermediate light commercial vehicles increased by 8% to 4,680 units, while passenger carrier despatches grew by 4% to 4,683 units.
Despatches of medium and heavy intermediate commercial vehicles in India fell slightly by 3.4% on year to 12,760 units, with domestic and export sales combined.
