Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General of Meteorology, India Meteorological Department and India’s Permanent Member to World Meteorological Organization, speaks with Rajesh Mahapatra about climate change, extreme weather events, and the accuracy of IMD’s weather forecasts.

There is a high probability that the southwest monsoon this year will be above normal this year, Mohapatra said, adding that monsoon is likely to be geographically uniform across most parts of the country.

He also said the predictability of weather has reduced because climate change. In the interview for BasisPoint Insight, Mohapatra also speaks about effect of urbanisation on weather, changing rainfall patterns over the country, and improvements in IMD’s weather forecast system.
